Less than 2 weeks – are you ready?

We hope you’ve managed to organise your bike and gear and are feeling prepared for this year’s trail ride but if not hopefully these videos can convince you to get a move on and get ready!

The trails team have been busy doing more advanced trail exploration last weekend and they are buzzing on the new trails. Like, I can’t sleep, so excited kind of buzzing….

Video: New advanced hill climb, Long Gully

April newsletter video 1

This hill climb is quite technical and is going to challenge you as it’s steeper than it looks, you’ll see when you get to the top!

April newsletter video 2

The boys thought they’d have a little race over the mustering tracks on Lindis Peaks. It is steeper than it looks, it’s technical and difficult with some gnarly hill climbs. At about 1.24m it meets the intermediate trail but the race isn’t over…..

Advanced loop extensions and latest giveaway

View from the top of an expert advanced descent looking across to an intermediate trail on Lindis Peaks Station. The exit at the bottom out of the descent sees advanced riders go through a creek section then up a rocky hill climb out. Prepare to be challenged and thrilled with this one!

With less than 3 weeks until this year’s trail ride things are really starting to happen on the trails and we’re getting really, really excited about it all! Our trails team have been exploring and navigating a new set of advanced and expert loops for all the riders that are after an extra challenge this year.

Wanaka Trail Ride expert loop descent

View from the other side of the expert descent down the fence line to the creek section. This is extremely steep and scarey to even look at, definitely a challenge for the expert riders!

Advanced loop extensions

Our trail’s team have been exploring and marking out new advanced terrain over Lindis Peaks Station and Long Gully farm. The video below show’s some naked advanced terrain exploration through scrub and rocks. It is a long hill climb that will test your fitness and gets steep and tricky toward the end.

We’re anticipating that last year’s advanced riders that thought they weren’t challenged enough will most definitely be planning a return after this video preview! Due to the wet conditions last year we noted that only 4 riders made it out of one of the steep 2.5km hill climbs. Rider’s please note that all of the hill climbs do lead to other trails so there is the opportunity to connect from the top (if you can make it!)

Video: Advanced trail huge hill climb

This video shows two attempts at a new hill climb section linking to the intermediate trail at the top. It will test advanced riders and fitness, the last section is more or less a wheel stand to the top while negotiating through rocks and scrub.

This section of the intermediate trail uses existing 4WD tracks and is super fun for all abilities.

Wanaka Trail Ride confirmed for Sunday 24th April

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Planning for this year’s event is well and truly underway for 2016. Over our hot Wanaka summer it has been far too dry on all of the differing farms’ land to access any of the tracks so we have been focusing our attention on working out what improvements we can make to our planning and marketing. We’ll be able to access the tracks again after a little further rain and then you’ll be updated here on the blog and via Facebook.

Website upgrade

We have redesigned the website so that it is more user friendly especially for those on mobile devices and this is our first post in our monthly blog about developments for the Wanaka Trail Ride. If you’d like to be emailed about future blogs please sign up for our newsletter.  They are only monthly in the first part of the year leading up to the trail ride so you won’t be continually spammed by the WTR year round.  All we want to do is let you know how your trail ride day is going to be the best we can possibly offer and mainly tell you all about the various giveaways from some of our sponsors that we’ll be running each month – so, yes, F R E E stuff! For starters we have x 2 day winter lift tickets from Cardrona to giveaway as well as prizes from Torpedo 7 with other local businesses signing up as sponsors each week.

Sunday 24th April – mark it on your calendar!

PoppySunday 24th April is the confirmed day for this years ride and it is also ANZAC weekend. In recognition that the trail ride takes place on this special weekend , we will donate $1 from every entry towards the Upper Clutha RSA’s poppy appeal.

Pre registrations now open

You can register online for the Wanaka Trail Ride on the Registration page very easily and pay by direct debit or cheque.  Prices are the same as last year but if you pre-register BEFORE Wednesday 20th April you will receive a $5 discount.

Entry fee prices

You can now also pre-register your lunch as part of your registration – $10 for a burger and drink. YES, not a packed lunch, or a sausage and bread, an actual burger for lunch. Select Lunch option when pre-registering and add $10 to your payment.

Competition

To kick things off we are offering x 1 FREE registration over on our Facebook page. Competition starts Monday 22nd February and runs for 1 week, closing Monday 29th February. All you have to do is like Wanaka Trail Ride on Facebook, like the post and tag two friends. Winner drawn Monday 29th February at 9.30pm.

Advanced loop extended

We are excited to announce that the Advanced loop trails will be extended by approximately another half of last year’s loop. We felt that to increase safety on the Intermediate trails  we could take the pressure off younger and Intermediate level riders by encouraging Advanced riders to explore new and developed trails with other Advanced riders. We have have spoken to the farm manager of Lindis Peaks Station and planned with his advice and expertise where the extended trails will go but since the summer has been so hot and dry we haven’t been able to mark out the tracks yet due to the risk of fire. The rain has returned but when it has done for a while and we’ve got the farm managers approval you’ll start to see updates on Facebook and on the blog and in the newsletter.

Questions or suggestions?

We are always open to helping answer your questions so that we can improve the trail ride and to listening to your feedback whether positive or critical, we would love to know how we’re doing. We have a hard working team on the committee made up of Montessori and Wanaka Primary School parents that are passionate about offering a really fun trail ride for all ages in the Wanaka region. So please get in touch! info@wanakatrailride.org
